Sunity Academy, a school that is well known for its achievements and contributions, was established in the year 1881.

The school was the brainchild of Maharani Sunity Devi, the daughter of Brahmananda Keshab Chandra Sen, and was patronised by Maharaja Nripendra Narayan. Comprising of 45 students, the school was initially named as Sunity College. The school was rechristened as Sunity Academy on 22nd August, 1916.     Maharani Sunity Devi was directly involved in the affairs of this institution. Her Highness gave annual grants for the institution, exempted the girl students from paying tution fees and also rewarded the successful students.     The year 1928 marked a milestone in the history of women education in Cooch Behar when Sunity Academy was affiliated to the University of Calcutta. The first student of this school to pass the Matriculation Examination was Smt. Binapani Devi. On the 21st January, 1937, the Representative of the Governor General of the Eastern States came to inspect/ visit Sunity Academy and made a remarkable comment -

 "This well-attended and well-managed school is a remark institution which does the State credit". The steady development of the institution is the manifestation of the inspiration, love for education and patronage of the royal family. This was coupled by the dedication of the great teachers imparting education in this school.

The students of the school have always ebdeavoured to enhance its greatness. In 1999, Tanusree Nath and Shyamasree Nath, students of this school, secured the eighth & fifteenth positions respectively in the Madhyamik Examination (secondary). In 2001, in the Higher Secondary Examination, Smt. Tanusree Nath and Smt. Smita Routh stood first & second respectively among girl candidates.     The achievements of the students revolve round a plethora of activities and are not limited to the academic sphere only. Other activities include sports, essay & quiz competitions.     The 5th April, 2003 is a red letter day for the Institution. The President of India, respected Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam had invited five students and two teachers from each state. The Headmistress Smt. Bhupali Roy and three students of Sunity Academy represented West Bengal. They spent a memorable day with the President of India and the students & teachers from other states.

    On the 4^th October, 2005, the State Minister for Agriculture, Sri. Kamal Kanti Guha inaugurated two classrooms within the school premise. The Chief Guest on the occassion was Sri. Ananta Roy, Sabhadhipati, Zilla Parishad and the Special Guest to bgrace the ceremony was Sri. Dipak Sarkar, M.L.A.

    On the 28^th December, 2002, the 'Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Eco Club' was founded. The school also has a Consumer Club having the aim of creating consumer awareness.

    Sunity Academy stands for women advancement. This year, the school celebrates its 125th year of imparting education. It is beyond doubt that in future the school shall move forward along the path of glory.
